    William Barclay(Author)

    Book details

World-renowned for his thought-provoking Daily Study Bible series, William Barclay is one of the best-loved commentators on the Bible. His brilliant communication, down-to-earth approach and sheer enthusiasm inspire spirituality and faith among his readers. Over 17 million people worldwide have bought The Daily Study Bible series, in many languages.

Markedly different from "Matthew", "Mark" and "Luke", "John" lacks the pithy phrases that the other three gospels possess. William Barclay reveals why, for many Christian people, the Gospel according to "John" is the most precious book of the "New Testament". It is the book on which, above all, people feed their minds and nourish their hearts, and in which they rest their souls.

‘William Barclay’s “magnum opus” is now able to delight and serve a new generation of Bible students and preachers.’ Ministry Today (Ministry Today)The only commentaries that I’ve used consistently are those written by William Barclay. They are absolutely fantastic and I wouldn’t give up my set for anything.’ (Steve Chalke)'I love the Gospel of John but after reading William Barclay's commentary, I love it even more ... Read these books, feed on the enlightenment they give and see how much more your heart is nourished and your love for Jesus grows as John protrays Him. These two volumes are part of Barclay's renowned New Daily Study Bible Commentaries. I think I will be buying more of them.' (Catherine Clarl)

I really like this study on John's Gospel, It is very informative and written in easily understandable language for the everyday user.

This commentary has lived up to my expectations as have other William Barclay publications. His knowledge and understanding of the Jewish and Greek cultures and language give rich meaning to a study of the Bible which is second to none. Having been exposed for many years to the cult-like teachings of a very narrow religion. it has enabled me to work out the truthful teachings of the Bible and has strenghened my faith now that I have extracated myself from a mind controlling organisation. I look forward to studying further commentaries in this series and have no hesitation in recommending this book to other serious bible students and others who desire a better understanding of God's Word.

This might not be the most sophisticated or the most detailed commentary on John, and sometimes one may disagree with the author's exposition of the gospel, but overall it is a honest, clear and accessible commentary. In a society where many have very vague and frequently unfounded ideas about what the gospels preach authoritative, scholarly commentaries are indispensable. Reading the original commentaries of Church Fathers without prior study may be challenging or even confusing; reading Barclay is much easier and it may prepare one for further study. I am looking forward to reading his commentaries on Matthew, Luke and Mark as well.

I bought both Vol. 1 and Vol.2 of these Barclay study books in order to have coverage of the whole of the gospel of John. For me they were going to provide background knowledge and a commentary for a series of sermons based on John's Gospel. Their detail, reliability and practicality are perfect. They are designed for use as an undated daily Bible reading/study resource, but they work every bit as well simply as a commentary. William Barclay needs no introduction; he is a well known Bible scholar, writer and preacher with many grateful readers. The series covers the whole of the New Testament should they be wanted. These are excellent books and I recommend them.
