    Book details

Mark's gospel is seen as training material for discipleship, centred on who Christ is and how people should respond to him.

At first sight the Gospel of Mark is a simple account of the ministry of Jesus with lots of stories, plenty of action, a large amount of human interest, and some very straight and searching questions, mostly from Jesus himself.Yet underlying the Gospel is the cross and the cost of discipleship, focusing the question of who Jesus was, and how people should respond to him.Donald English's exposition picks up Mark's focus on faith as a risky, total commitment to Christ, and on its mysteries - pre-eminently, why some people believe, and others do not, even to the point of opposition.

Very impressed with the purchase. The book was in excellent condition and my husband is very pleased with it. Extremely helpful for the sermon he is preparing whilst we are in a sermon series on the gospel of Mark.

Clear and concise. Easy to read. I would like a little more detail on modern scholarship though. Still, it is worth reading.

This commentary is well up to the usual BST standard. The exposition of the text is clear enough and dealing with any translation difficulties is reasonably thorough. Occasionally it seems to get into areas which as a conservative evangelical I feel are a bit of an irrelevance, but obviously that's not the case for everyone! It probably deserves half a star more if I could give it one and this review has properly suffered because I've been using Steve Wilmsherst's excellent commentary in the EP Welwyn series alongside this one. Definitely worth having, but if you have a choice of getting one commentary on Mark I'd definitely go for Steve's over this!

'The Bible speaks today' is a good series of commentaries. Probably more suited to Bible Study or preaching than casual reading, but still accessible enough to read. The Amazon price was really good.
